Using light as his motif, this collection demonstrates the exquisiteness of Okazaki’s monochrome world. Okazaki has been photographing ruins in Japan for the past 10 years. These tranquil, inorganic spaces are circumscribed with the motif of light that reflects Okazaki’s spirituality and aestheticism. They splendidly represent the photographer’s psychological world. The tension permeated from these images conveys the inner motives of Okazaki upon photographing. At the same time, they exemplify a mysterious aura of sublimity. It could be said that, while Okazaki displayed great techniques in gelatin silver printing, he presented an internal world that of which exceeds his photographed objects.
“I was allured into the beauty of black and white photography and began my creation during the 1980’s. The objects of my photography resulted from the abstract motifs taken from nature, such as the earth, water, ice, etc. I also started photographing ruins that were left behind in nature. My images were taken from spaces found in the light. By illustrating texture and light rays in detail, my photographs render a stronger sense of expression than reality. For, I want to create images that are freer and more beautiful than the relationship between the photographed objects and I.” Okazaki was born in 1959, in Kochi, Japan. He studied photography at Nihon University, Department of Fine Arts and started making photographs earnestly since 1985. Okazaki has had 7 solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Japan. This is Okazaki’s first solo exhibition in New York. This exhibition consists of 18 gelatin silver prints from Okazaki’s work between 1996 and 2002. Contact : Machiko Shibata |
